Description
The gifts and musical maturity of André Mathieu are so astounding that from the start people wanted to believe in a deception and accused his father Rodolphe of being the author of his son’s works! Moreover, it must be recognized, Mathieu himself caused the triple ostracism which, even today, weighs on him. First, by composing music that, although scholarly, is nonetheless accessible in a Quebec thirsty for modernity. Then, by diverting his gifts in pianothons which stripped the dignity of the profession of musician and finally, by sinking into an alcoholism too well documented.
It is therefore with unmitigated joy that we welcome this recording by Jean-Michel Dubé, a young pianist from Quebec, who was not afraid to challenge the status quo that Mathieu’s music is unworthy of the attention of worthy musicians. With the emergence of a new generation, the music of André Mathieu, this missing link in our musical history, can finally take its place, that of scholarly, romantic and modern music.
